Ismail “Door”

Ismail poetThe Telugu poem rendered into English here is “Talupu” by Ismail, the pen name of Mohammed Ismail (1928), without a doubt one of the great poets from Andhra Pradesh, who gained his prominence with his humanistic and evocative poetry. From bits and pieces I read about Ismail, I gather that early on in his life Marxism and Sri Sri influenced him, but he grew away from them into a more nuanced poet with a clear affinity for nature and life and how they intertwine. Just to show you how bewitched I am with his poetry, see my translations of his two other poems–నూతిలో తాబేలు and పద్య సమాధిhere in The Caravan Magazine. Telugu originals for both these poems can be read from

Upset with me
Suddenly opening the door
You left

For bursting open
The door I closed long ago for your sake,
And letting in sunshine and air
Many thanks

The Glory Bold

I too
offered a sacrificial fuel
to the world’s fire!

I too
poured a tear of tribute
into the world’s torrent!

I too
yelled with a mad throat
with the earth’s roar!

# # #

When summer scorched
did I not swelter like a bat!

As the blustery drizzle
fell all around
did I not drench at the fathom’s height?
When the winter’s cutting cold froze me numb
I even howled with cries of hunger!

When I alone remain standing-
Fiery winds, rainclouds, snow drizzles
will break, striking the earth!

The many splendored stars
peering down from the sky
will fall exploding, vomiting blood!

Days breaking
Nights withering
The Great Deluge
will engulf this whole world!

# # #

The epoch will be upon us
When I alone will fill the whole earth
the very sighs of my moaning cries
soaking the world in a hailstorm!

# # #

I too
will sprout
as the white petal
of the lotus of the universe!

I too
will swoon
as the string
on the lute of the universe!

I too
will rise up
as the flag
on the palace of the earth!
