And must thy lyre, so long divine,

Degenerate into hands like mine?

–Lord Byron, in his “The Isles of Greece”

Riffiti mobile app.

Riffiti ఇప్పుడు Android and iPhone మీద ఉచితం!

That is how I feel about our spoken languages, especially my Telugu language. The lyre that the sound of Telugu is, is degenerating, literally, into the quick, coarse and judgmental hands on online keyboards. About nine years ago when I tried to translate this M.S. Ramarao song, “Chengoola Alameeda…” into English. The outcome was pedantic, and less than honorable. I think that was when the seeds for Riffiti were sown in my head.

“Oral tradition is antifragile,” said Nassim Taleb. People’s varieties of experiences are like entries in a thesaurus. They give us access to degrees of meaning. How do we access these shades of meanings? Arts and literature of course, is the answer. But as we move to online worlds, our attention spans are dwindling. The best we are able to do is to link to some YouTube movie song link. But we can do better. What if we make spoken word the center of our online interactions? What if we bring back the oral tradition with the clever use of technology? The result is Riffiti mobile app.

When you open Riffiti (a free app both on Android and iPhone), you will see Worlds, which are topic/interest focused. Anyone can create or join a World. In a Riffiti World people can interact by speaking into mobile video for 20-seconds maximum. Moreover, anyone can ask questions by typing them in. But such interactions do not have to be questions. It’s all up to how we want to use Riffiti. The beauty of Riffiti is all interaction takes place via spoken word. No need to write lengthy texts. We made it this way because showing one’s face and speaking in one’s own words is a powerful way to keep the divine lyre of Telugu singing!

I am convinced that Riffiti will be a place where a river of insight from literary and art world will flow freely in spoken words. Writers, poets, journalists, travel lovers, playwrights, skit and comedy artists, young men and women, practically everyone with something to say, will find Riffiti a place they love to check in, and no reason to leave!
